The Area

Buonconvento - within the Province of Siena in the Italian region of Tuscany, located south of Florence and about 16 miles southeast of Siena it is an area known as the Crete Senesi. An area of fantastic beauty and scenery - from the famous poplar trees to the individual dwellings of character and style that makes the area so unique.

Still enclosed in the walls built by the Sienese in 1371, the town has preserved the northern gate opening towards the capital of the province - Siena.

Buonconvento still boasts a fine Town Hall on whose facade one can distinguish the coats-of-arms of olden days. The main tourist attraction, is the Sacred Art Museum, which houses works from the local churches as well as beautiful wooden and marble sculptures.

Also the threshing festival, usually in August, where the whole village turn out to thresh the grain harvest.

Amongst the other sights worth seeing are many castles scattered over the surrounding land, such as the fortress of Bibbiano Guiglieschi, over a thousand years old, the tower of Bibbiano and the great architectural complex of Castelnuovo Tancredi.

Buonconvento is a lovely medieval town off the usual tourist trail. It is an ideal base for exploring the art and architectural delights of Siena and the local villages and towns.
